Hiking can be a lot of fun. But in our excitement for adventure, we may forget to pack the most essential items that we may need during the hike. Packing our bag that has all the basic items and yet is light enough to carry easily should be our goal. Andy Hayes, an enthusiastic traveller and photographer, has compiled a list of things you should do and items you can’t afford to not pack. Here you go:
1. The weather report
Well, considering we live in a world where one can access an accurate weather report with a single click, one should not hesitate to do so. You don’t want the weather to spoil your trip and your mood, do you?
2. A torch
Who needs a real torch when one has a good phone? Andy Hayes from Oregon believes in preparing for contingencies. There is no harm in taking preventive measures, even if you don’t plan on staying outside after dark and your phone has enough battery.
3. A first aid kit
Your hike may not involve lakes or rivers or mountains. But there are plenty of possibilities for which you should be prepared. Always carry a compact first aid kit which contains the basics like adhesive bandages, antiseptic ointment, pain relievers etc.
4. Water
And while this should have been on the top of the list, it slipped my mind. Andy Hayes from Oregon State Treasury insists that you carry a lot of water with you. How unfair will it be if you come back sooner than you intended to because of lack of water?
5. Tell someone about your hike beforehand
Let’s be more responsible. The area you intend to go to may not have good network coverage. Why make your family and friends worry unnecessarily? Make sure you tell at least one person about your hike even if you live alone.
